Ingredients:
Idly | 8 |
Big onion | 2(medium, finely chopped) |
Tomato | 2(medium, chopped) |
Green chilly | 2(medium,chopped) |
Ginger | 2 inch piece(finely chopped) |
Chilly powder | 1 tspoon |
Turmeric powder | 1/4 tspoon |
Asafoetida powder | 1/4 tspoon |
Coriander leaves | 1 pinch |
Salt | to taste |
Oil | 1 tbl spoon |
Mustard | 1 tspoon |
Dry red chilly | 3 |
Urad dal | 1 tspoon |
Garam masala | 3/4 tspoon |
Water | 1/4 tspoon |

Preparation:
(1) Prepare idly and cut into small cube shapes.
(2) Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard. Once it splutters add urad dal, dry red chilly and curry leaves. Now add ginger and green chilly. Saute till the raw smell goes off. To this add chopped onion. Saute well till the color changes brownish.
(3) Now reduce the flame to low and add turmeric powder, chilly powder and asafoetida powder. Mix well. To this, add chopped tomato and salt. In medium flame, saute well till tomato turns juicy.
(4) Once it turns a paste form, add garam masala. Mix well and pour water. Once it starts boiling add coriander leaves. Gravy for masala idly is now ready. Add chopped idly to this masala and mix well for some seconds.
(5) Close the vessel with a lid for 2 minutes. Your masala idly is now ready.
(3) Now reduce the flame to low and add turmeric powder, chilly powder and asafoetida powder. Mix well. To this, add chopped tomato and salt. In medium flame, saute well till tomato turns juicy.
(4) Once it turns a paste form, add garam masala. Mix well and pour water. Once it starts boiling add coriander leaves. Gravy for masala idly is now ready. Add chopped idly to this masala and mix well for some seconds.
(5) Close the vessel with a lid for 2 minutes. Your masala idly is now ready.
